What help is available for cancer patient without insurance?

  Were you ever a veteran. I freind of mine is being treated in the veterans hospital now, he is in the same situtuation.

  Then there is your local welfare office - they will be able to direct you to the right place.

  Ask a physicians office if they have any applications for the uninsured. Big drug companies like Pfizer, Merck, and Bristol-meyers squibb have assistance programs that provide your medicines if you qualify. Programs are out there, but you have to look.

  go to the National institutes of health if you want to sign up for a clinical trial, they pay for everything, meds, docs, airfare, hotel, food, etc. only prob is it’s experimental treatment

  First, do not give up hope as sometimes that is all we have left. Hang on to it. Now,call your local DSS office and apply for aid. You might be intitled to Medicaid and this will pay for everything. Right now, I have a friend that is going throught all the chemo and rad treatment for cancer of his liver, he has worked forever, but his insurance would not pay for all the treatments. He applied and got Medicaid. If he can then you should be able to do this. If you are near Austin, there is a research place, (I used to live in Copperas Cove and this is how I know this) that is somewhere near the University that helps people with cancer in obtaining treatments. Check out Cancer research centers and usually they can help or at least point you in a direction of an organization that can and will.

  Have him talk with a social worker at the hospital where he is being treated.

  Don’t get a trial drug tested on you! They’re all very dangerous chemicals… There are other ways you can cure cancer, you don’t NEED chemotherapy to cure cancer. Making dietary lifestyle changes, and supporting yourself with diet is FAR more effective at treating cancer anyway. (Check out the success rates on (The Oasis of Hope Clinic in Mexico!) - far higher than CHEMO…

  Ditto to what the girl already said about drug company assistance programs.

  Also, most big hospitals have a free clinic. What about MD Anderson? That’s the biggest cancer hospital in the country, I think. he needs to get into the system. Does he have a physician who can refer him to a university hospital?

  I am in the same boat with my mom, so I feel your frustration. Not knowing everything about his finances or Texas, I think the ‘best’ (if you can say that) part is he is unemployed. This can possibly lead to him being eligible for local county assistance and also state medicaid assistance. If he can get both of these, it can help. Personally I think all the local and state care is very restrictive to get and doesn’t always cover everything.

  Secondly, if the above doesn’t help try the American Cancer Society and they can provide local information based on his (or your) needs. They provided me with much information but none worked for my mom out here (just a bad situation), but it might for him.
  is the drug assitance program website…he can probablly qualify for drug assistance this way (although not all drugs are there).

  It is very hard to be without insurance and have cancer…all hospitals look down on you in some ways and are often tough (want to kick you out to get paying patients in). It’s even worse in America because American hospitals send you home when you are not even better and being without insurance is *very* costly. Unfortunatley, his bad option is to (when at home) try his best but if it doesn’t work out, go to the emergency room. I hate to say that but typically most states require emergency room assistance without discrimination.
