What do you say to old people who say, “I’m 84. I’ve got my burial plot ready for when I die.” ?!

I work in insurance, so I have all these old customers who like to come up to the office to chat (I hate but tolerate) and they sit there and tell me about how they’re ready to die. What do I say to stuff like that. I usually just smile and nod…. eh

Ask them maybe one thing in their lives they wish they could have done. Talk about their lives as opposed to death that is reaching near, Let them reminiance on that. Nobody likes to hear of death yet a person at that age has come to terms with it so there is nothing you can reall say to that.

Tell them you admire the fact they have taken care of these issues so their children do not have to worry about it when their time comes.

they are facing the inevitable and care about sparing their children the unpleasant task of burying them.
I would say, “how caring of you to consider your children’s feelings you know most people are not so thoughtful as to do that for their children. They must love you very much? That shows me you care about your children.” Things like that so they feel they are leaving this earth loved and appreciated.

If you hate to hear them chat turn the topic to something that may interest you. If you really listen to an elderly person you can recognize wisdom that your young friends have yet to acquire. So ask that older person a question about some long ago event. And then tell them that it looks like its gonna be a long time before they get to use that gravesite purchase.

Every thing happens for a reason. some people might not see it that way but it does. Old people have a lot of life experience. Just asking why to what they say can gain you a little knowledge. You might learn something that you didn’t know before. People, the elderly in particular love to share their life experience. Ask them about their life. Im sure you have something that you might beable to share or impart unto them. Just be cause they are old doesn’t mean they can’t still learn something!
